BACKGROUND:

Colonized models of schooling in okanogan

"After the Civil War, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs made the determination that the solution to the Indian Problem was the lack of one language and the various customs and religious beliefs of the different tribes. The only solution... was to indoctrinate Indian children into Christianity and the English Language. The children were forced to give up their native language, customs, and beliefs...

The Colville Reservation was created by Executive Order July 2, 1872. With the discovery of gold, it was cut down in size."
